Affirmations are simply self talk but constructed in a resourceful manner. Do affirmations work?
Around the turn of the century Emile Coue derived and implemented what has become possibly the most famous affirmation of all time. His patients were instructed to affirm daily "Every day in every way, I am getting better and better". Positive results ensued from this conditioning. Many commercial programs such as ThinkRightNow use the same technique with a background of relaxing music. Music of a certain pitch (around 60 beats per minute) is used to put the brain in a receptive mode the alpha state. You can achieve the same state naturally by relaxing and slowing breathing.
Affirmations produce a point of focus that by continued use withdraw attention from other less resourceful beliefs and in effect install a new dominant thought. If we are conscious of our thoughts we can consider how many times a day we say "we can't do ...." something, often it is remarkably frequent.
Construction of affirmations should always be in the present tense, avoid negatives like no and not etc. When writing a goal focus on what is wanted and not what is not wanted. The statement should be specific not open ended or vague. A typical trap is something like "I want more money". Affirmations typically start with "I am .." and is fine for some types of affirmation. The mind will tend to reject issues where the physical evidence is to the contrary. An example would be if you were affirming yourself to be of a financial status which you do not believe yourself to be such as a millionaire but only had a penny in the pocket. The affirmation can be framed slightly differently in terms of making a choice or a process. "I choose to be..." would probably be a lot more acceptable or indeed "I am in the process of..."
An effective shortcut if you use a computer regularly, is software which runs unobtrusively in the background while you are working. Affirmation messages are posted to the screen which are perceived by the subconscious but do not interrupt normal work flow.
Here are a few other affirmations to get you going. Note the value and power of affirming for someone else what you wish to become. You must become, that is resonate with that which you wish to be. Your intention will return to you in the most miraculous ways.
